Back to the old ways…

While the rest of the world is finally phasing out the last of their non-smartphones, I have given up mine in favor of the simplicity offered by the basic phone. If I could have my way, I would be done with the cell phone altogether and go back to a land line. Life seemed simpler when we weren’t wireless.

All that to say, we are no longer using the Geocaching app or c:geo for our geocaching adventures. We have reverted back to the Geocaching “days of yore” where I must create Pocket Queries, download them as GPX files to import into GSAK, and then upload them to both the Garmin Nuvi (as a custom POI file) and the Magellan eXplorist GC.

While I have no regrets about going back to the basic phone (the Verizon salesman refused to dignify my reference to a non-smartphone as a “dumb phone”), I do miss the ability to cache at any time. That is actually the only thing that I miss about the smartphone, but I cannot justify the expense of the data plan just for a hobby (and I certainly cannot write it off as a business expense if that is the only thing I am using it for!).

Getting rid of the smartphone slowed our progress a bit. According to Cacher Stats (shown on this website in the right sidebar), we were as high in the Ohio rankings as #490 at one point last year. We are now back to the mid 500s, being passed by phone-cachers and others with data access. I need to get into gear and get hunting again.

See you on the hunt!
