As we drove along I-40 between Flagstaff and Petrified Forest National Park, I noticed Winslow, Arizona not too far off the highway. I thought it would be a novelty to stop by and stand on the corner there. It was apparent upon our arrival in town that they expect many people to come and do just that!
I can’t give the town an adequate review since we spent an hour (at most) just passing through. I will say that what we did in WInslow was not worth going out of the way to do! If we pass through this area in the future with more time to spend, I could see that there was more that I’d like to do around town.
We followed the coordinates for a Virtual Geocache at La Posada. The hotel was beautifully restored, and, after some of the architectural history that we had just learned at Petrified Forest National Park’s Desert Inn, I wondered if this might be one of Harvey’s hotels and saw some of Colter’s influence. A little bit of digging showed that our suspicions were correct.
It seemed a bit awkward to approach the Geocache in the rear courtyard from the parking area. We did not see any public entrances clearly marked, although Google Maps shows this as an active Amtrak station (so there should be public access somehow!). We walked around through the garden (hoping that the cache owner had sufficiently gained permission for us to be there), got what we needed to claim the cache, watched a train go by, then headed back to the Jeep.
We then followed the coordinates for a cache that promised to bring us to the “Standin’ on a corner” corner. The geocaching app (the only GPS device we used on this trip) was not refreshing as we approached, so I wound up passing it by a few blocks at first.
